miami.jpgIt’s going to be a hot time in Miami from December 7th through the 9th. That’s because the Miami Design District is once again hosting Design Miami, a “global forum for collecting, exhibiting, discussing and creating design”. You can be sure that some world class ideas and concepts will be cooked up at this event.

According to the Design Miami web site, the events offers design galleries, satellite exhibitions, design performances, design talks where international designers can discuss issues and compare notes, and design awards. Ambra Medda and Amy Lau founded the event in 2005, originally calling it Design.05. But since the tradition lived on, and now even has a summertime sister event in Basel, Switzerland, a more fitting name was needed. Hence, “Design Miami”.

As with so many things in Miami, this event is all about the style. There are requirements about the surroundings in which exhibitors can display their wares. According to the official Design Miami web site, “The Design Galleries must not only exhibit and sell valuable work, but also present their pieces in highly curated, beautiful installations, often designed by notable architects and designers.” Pieces are also checked carefully to make sure they are authentic.

Design.05 was proclaimed an instant success, and now Design Miami is the talk of the town.

The address for Design Miami 2007 is NE 2nd Avenue and 40th Street. The public shows will take place from December 7-9, 11am-7pm. There is a preview for registered members of the press on December 6th, from 6-7pm. Admission to the event costs $15 for the general public, $12 for museum staff or trade members, and $5 for students and senior citizens. Design talks will be free to the public at 3626 NE 1st Court from December 7-9, 5:30pm-6:30pm.
